Today we are looking at a showcase of Web Designs that have all included some watercolor effects with inspiring effectiveness. Below we have taken some screencaps and included some of the ways these fantastic designers have brought this ‘mixed media’ feel to their designs and the web audiences interacting with them.

Watercolor Effects in Web Design

Fabien Barral’s site uses a slight stained watercolor texture in the background is subtly employed to add a bit of richness to the header. The arrows also carry a light bit of watercolor texturing, allowing them to stand out a bit more. With the site layout being so clean and sharp, the watercolor effects add a nice bit of balance here.

XHTML Cafe fully commits to the whole mixed media look with their colorfully illustrated header that captures the look of a pen and watercolor drawing perfectly. Giving the site a whimsical feel, the watercolor effects work flawlessly to help sell this tone to the user.

Football Made in Africa uses bold, in your face watercolor effects all throughout the design with stunning results. Watercolors are not often the first thing that comes to mind when going for the grunge design approach, but as we see here, it can be done with a hard edge that works fabulously to that end.

Moonbeam Illustrations has a wonderfully, and deeply textured site, that features splashes of watercolor works and effects in various fashion throughout. All of these elements come together to create a fantastic layered constructed feel to the design.

Small White Bear blends watercolor textures and cute illustrated iconography and imagery to help bring a serious issue to the forefront with a design that tugs gently at the heartstrings. The subtle watercolor effects adding dashes of color and depth to the site.

Antonio Rozco’s site is another fine example of watercolor effects being used to help create a grungy look for the site. Done very artistically, including the canvas like textured background, the design ties all of the elements together beautifully. The watercolors acting as a nice highlight to the rest.

Jacksonville Artwalk uses a mass of layered watercolor effects to create a colorfully muddied focal point to allow their massive header to display against the large image behind it. With the nature of the site being what it is, this perfectly compliments and accents the group’s mission and purpose.

Pupa has dozens of illustrated children gathered in interest sitting on the floor for the design, all of which have watercolor-esque fills to give the site a welcoming and playful appearance. Overall, while subtle, the effects brilliantly compliment the feel of the site, and give it that finishing touch of a mixed media illustration.

The Happy Time Cafe has a beautifully designed interface that uses a multi-color watercolor wash behind the elements in the header and footer (and more). Each element also has the look and feel of a watercolor painting. Working well with the canvas texturing beneath it, the site has the feel of an actual painting versus a digital rendering of a painting.

Olszanska is one of the first sites that we have come to where the watercolor effects are used more for highlights than as texture or background. With these subtle inclusions, the site takes on a bit more grunge to mix with the other elements working in that tone through the design. Nicely accented.

Francesco Mugnai’s design uses multiple instances of watercolor effects to compile and complete a very technically sound and stunning illustration for the site’s header. As both background and fills, the site’s watercolor-esque design has the perfect blend of a hard grunge edge and soft artistic heart that makes it an easy feature in this showcase.

Klinkov’s site design takes on a much more minimalistic approach than most of the ones we have featured thus far, but the watercolor painted effects help to give the whitespace it encroaches upon a nice bit of texture and personality. Given that the site is home to a painter, this is no mistake.

World Snowboard Day 2007 was marked with this stunningly detailed and layered design filled with rich watercolor textures and effects throughout. While the site does have music that plays without bidding or warning, the design itself was too breathtaking not to feature.

Simple Living Style uses some wonderful watercolor effects throughout the design to create a very simply style that is both charming and welcoming. The soft colors and watercolor texturing work harmoniously to envelope the user in a warm, cozy blanket of visual comfort.

Lucuma has a design with a ‘painted’ background filled with watercolor-like brush strokes to give the design some texture and a few extra touches of soft grunge. Overall, while simple, it works extremely well to sell the tone the site carries.

Giancarlo Fajardo has a gorgeous header that is perfectly accentuated with splashes of watercolor texturing and patterns. The overly artistic design encapsulates an imaginative nature that users will immediately tie to the one behind it.

Erguvan Platin does so many things right with this effective and engaging design, that simply highlighting the brilliant use of watercolor textures deployed in the background seems a bit of a short sell. But the stunning way they are used, is just one of the many reasons this site is worth a look.

These offices have been through several different guises. They used to be a garden, then they were a railway station, then a garage, before finally being converted into the HQ for The Hub. The site had been untouched since the 1940s and the talented architects at ch+qs made it their mission to leave as much of the original features in place. The result is airy, light and effortlessly elegant.

Comvert’s Bastard Store, Milan

Comvert manufacture clothing and accessories for skateboarders so their offices are appropriately cool. They’re based in a renovated theatre in central Milan with custom designed interiors to reflect the tastes, habits and work patterns of their employees. The building features impressive marble floors, curved staircases and a graffitied courtyard complete with an obligatory enormous skating bowl.

The Red Bull HQ is the brainchild of the quirky designers at Jump Studios. The focus is clearly on fun, with a huge slide that runs through the centre of the building sitting playfully next to a sleek floating staircase.

And coming full circle, we’re back with Google, this time at their new Tel Aviv offices. Opened in 2012 and covering an epic 8,000 square metres, each of its seven floors have been styled around a different theme including culture and heritage, joy and optimism, friends and family and humour and fun. I want to focus this tutorial on using modal windows within a typical webpage. We just need to include two files out of the Bootstrap framework. And the JS codes are not overly complicated to understand. My example demo allows users to dynamically update the background color, so this does admittedly have some more sample JS then you will need. But it is an excellent introduction to adding these brief components into any ordinary website.

Grabbing the Files

Start off by downloading a copy of Bootstrap directly off Github. This will include the “bootstrap.css” and “bootstrap.min.js” files which I’ve added into my own demo. If file size is a problem then you may download the bootstrap-modal.js file which only allows space for JavaScript related to modal windows. Additionally Jordan Schroter has released an extended Bootstrap modal class which includes responsive designs and some other nice features.

But I will be using the full bootstrap JS file which works exactly the same. Now we need to include these files into a default HTML5 layout. I have copied over my header codes which also reference similar external documents.

The core CSS file for this layout is called default.css. I have also included a few styles to overwrite the default Bootstrap designs for modal windows. Additionally we have an external file named modals.js which handles both custom modal windows. This file also has custom functions written by me to save time with the interface features. But we can get into the JavaScript later, first we should dive into the page body content and structure.

Webpage Body HTML

Two big components of the body section are the trigger buttons, plus the modal windows themselves. We should break down each piece starting with the button links.

These are the two buttons you will find in the center of the demo page. Each one is linked to a modal window which is actually coded right into the HTML page. Bootstrap allows developers to either load modal windows using local HTML, or include a remote file via Ajax. Notice the href values are tied into IDs on each of the modal blocks.

My first sample is just basic text with an image file. Bootstrap provides a standard for creating modal windows using three different sections: .modal-header, .modal-body, and .modal-footer. Each class may be attached onto any HTML element and it should display the same. You’ll also notice a small X in the corner with an anchor attribute data-dismiss.

These tiny additions into the Bootstrap library make customizing modal windows super easy. All of the components are readily available, you will just need to memorize(or save) the codes. On the core outer DIV element you will find three different classes which are very important. It looks like class=”modal hide fade” to include all the default settings. Let’s take a peek at the 2nd modal window.

I have very similar classes and elements placed in the header and footer sections of this modal window, too. The internal body content has a small informational div with the class .alert-info. Bootstrap has these custom-coded for error alerts, warnings, and other dialog boxes. Now you’ll see I have added the class .dark onto the modal container.

Inside the page CSS document I’ve created a new set of rules to overwrite the default modal styles. Using the class .dark gives this modal window a richer experience and the custom input forms really contrast well off the darker colors. The original source is from this Net Tuts+ article which also works using checkboxes.

Unique CSS Styles

Since a lot of the resets have already been placed inside the default Bootstrap stylesheet, my custom document is not very long. We have some useful classes defining the custom inputs and defining the darker modal windows. It should not require any additional CSS to get modal windows working properly – but it is worth looking over my codes to see how you may skin your own modal themes.

I have followed a specificity which is adopted from the original Twitter Bootstrap CSS file. We need to ensure that each selector is nested deep enough to become the primary rendering block. I’ve included the !important keyword within a couple of properties which were not displaying properly. But the custom class provides a more branded feeling to your website.

Displaying Modals with JavaScript

We should jump right into my customized JS file modals.js which will explain how we can piece the HTML links and hidden windows together. Since we are looking at both jQuery and Bootstrap framework codes, I will break down individual snippets to explain in detail.

This will open the jQuery DOM check and defines a brand new function called hideModal(). The internal parameter is a jQuery selector pointing at the modal window to hide. This small chunk of code which will save us time when calling the same function over again.

The two IDs #okwin01 and #okwin02 are targeting specific buttons within the two windows. These are both the ‘OK’ button which hides the form. When they are clicked we need to reference the hideModal() function I wrote earlier. But the 2nd window also calls another function named updateBGColor(). This will determine the currently selected radio input and change the body background color accordingly. Shouldn’t matter if you understand those codes but it is a neat little script.

This is the last interesting piece to our jQuery modal functions and will run after the user clicks ‘Cancel’ in the BG color modal window. You will find all the other functions we were using, plus a new set of commands used for resetting the input values. If the user opens our modal window and changes input values without saving, then cancels, we just reset back to the currently selected value based on the current body BG color. It is all straightforward once you get the hang of reading through functions. But check out my sample code as a reference guide.

Final Thoughts

Bootstrap is a tremendous library which is full of distinct widgets & design features. You could spend weeks toying around with all of the various pieces of Bootstrap. And the basic CSS resets do help to jumpstart projects which are on a strict timeframe.

Ideally you should be able to replicate much of the same codes displayed here to get your own modal windows in Bootstrap. But definitely grab a copy of my source code which you may compare with your own when running into trouble. There actual Bootstrap documentation is very well-designed and easy to read. If you have been using Google Reader to subscribe to the Vandelay Design Blog please migrate to another service or subscribe by email so that you don’t miss out on future blog content.

Feedly is available as a Chrome or Firefox extension, or iOS and Android apps (all options are free). The steps below will show how to install Feedly in Chrome and migrate your feeds from Google Reader.

Step 1: Install Feedly

Visit Feedly.com and click on the button to get Feedly for Chrome. Then click on the “Add to Chrome” button.

Step 2: Connect to Google Reader

Then click on the “Connect to Google Reader” button to import your feeds. You’ll need to be logged in to your Google account.

Step 3: Allow Access

Next, you’ll see a message from Google asking if you want to give access to Feedly. Click “allow access” and Feedly will quickly and automatically import your feed subscriptions. It will even import the items that you have starred/saved.

Step 4: Start Using Feedly

After you’ve imported your feeds you can start using Feedly just like you used Google Reader. Thankfully, Feedly has made it a very easy and painless process.
